So, I went to Boekenhouthoek with hopes of finding more, and I wasn’t disappointed. It’s a quartz lover’s paradise, though all the stones are covered in iron coatings. Beneath that rusty surface, however, could be stunning light purple amethyst waiting to be uncovered. The day turned into a frenzy as more and more sellers arrived, eager to offload their lower-quality quartz and amethyst. What makes Boekenhouthoek unique is that the houses are built on top of the quartz deposit, so the locals tunnel into the ground—even under their homes—to extract the crystals. It’s like watching a scene of termite ants digging, all happening in unprotected yards where children play nearby. The buying became intense as my vehicle filled up and my funds started to run out. But I managed to walk away with nearly 700 kg of Spirit Quartz specimens, all of which need to be cleaned.
